On Friday 28th June I was working in London for the day. I have this weird thing about station pianos and I know there is one at Tottenham Court Road. After playing for a while on my own, I moved aside for lots of other people to play, talent from all over the world. Visitors, tourists, workers, lovers, all walks of life shuffled from carriage to piano stool and back again. The whole station echoed with shared songs, tinkling ivories and voices alike. New and old. Genderless, faceless union, simply there for the music, not even knowing eachother's names. Wordless communication passed between total strangers in perfect understanding. Passers by stopped to listen, or they powered on past, removing an earbud to let the music bleed through as they walked at high speed from A to B. Then this guy got up to play. He started to play 'I wish I knew how' by Nina Simone. I had no idea who he was, but smiled and said 'I know this one!' 'You want to sing it?' 'I don't know the words' 'Google them' 'Really?' 'Yeah, let's go' So we did. When the song was over we hugged. 'I'm Dani, what's your name?' 'It's Kofi, good to meet you' Thanks to lovely Rachel for filming and superb Kofi for sharing the video.
