I& #x27;m sure most piano students know what a harpsichord is, but anyone seen such a keyboard instrument before? This is the harp piano, also called the claviharp. This is a 19th century musical instrument invented by Johann Christian Dietz that combined a harp with a keyboard. Struck by what he saw as difficulties and defects of the harp, he built this instrument which connected a keyboard to the harp strings to address limitations of the harp - susceptibility of strings to atmospheric change (harp uses nylon/gut strings), inconsistency of sound as finger motion varies (personally I feel that this is what makes the sound unique and beautiful), limited diatonic scale (without pedals), and lack of dampers. The claviharp& #x27;s keyboard plucked the strings (as a harpsichord) rather than strike them (as a piano). Because of @playitforwardsg, there’s now over 20 public pianos scattered around 🇸🇬 open to the public to use!! . . When I was shopping one day, I stumbled across a piano of theirs and of course—I had to play! Here’s 2️⃣ songs that I could remember through memory! One of which is a personal FAVORITE of mine called, “It’s ALL Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion (@celinedion)!! . . Went to my Alma mater primary school to pick up my student today. The school has changed a lot, and now, there is a piano at the foyer for students to play on during their free time. Nowadays, quite a number of schools have a piano placed in a common area for students to play on, and I think this is a really good idea.
